Egypt to give Italy Cairo metro's surveillance footage of murdered Italian researcher

CAIRO, May 29 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian top prosecutor agreed on Tuesday to provide Italy with the CCTV footage of a Cairo metro station associated with the investigation into the murder of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni, official MENA news agency reported.

Regeni disappeared in Cairo on Jan. 25, 2016, and his tortured, half-naked body was found nine days later in a ditch on the outskirts of the Egyptian capital city.

Egypt's Prosecutor-General Nabil Sadeq also agreed to provide Italian prosecutors with new documents of the recent investigations done by the Egyptian prosecution over the kidnapping and killing of the 28-year-old Italian PhD student.

Italian Ambassador to Cairo Giampaolo Cantini told an Italian TV Tuesday that the retrieved recordings of the Cairo metro station, where Regeni was spotted before his disappearance, have already been handed to the Italian side, according to Italian ANSA news agency.

Cantini was appointed as new ambassador to Cairo in September 2017, more than a year after Rome withdrew his predecessor over Regeni's murder.

Regeni's disappearance and death took place amid intensive security deployment in Cairo and other major cities in Egypt ahead of the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 25 uprising that toppled ex-president Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

A few weeks after Regeni's body was found, the Egyptian police said they busted and killed a five-member gang in Cairo and found Regeni's handbag, passport and student ID card at the residence of a gang member's relative.

Rome's chief prosecutor said that the young researcher was under Egyptian surveillance before his death due to his research into Egypt's independent labour unions, according to an article published by an Italian newspaper on the second anniversary of Regeni's disappearance.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi repeatedly vowed to bring Regeni's murderers to justice, blaming "conspirators" who attempt to cause tension in Egypt's ties with Italy for the tragedy.
